Copenhagen – international event capital of 2009

2009 is the largest international event year for Copenhagen. These huge events, as well as increased focus on congresses, conventions and branding is Wonderful Copenhagen’s main strategy to keep thousands of tourists coming to the Danish capital in 2009/10.

Huge international events will attract thousands to the city in times of financial crisis. Wonderful Copenhagen sees these events as an investment in the future.

The international interest in Copenhagen that will arise due to the events in 2009 will be used as a jumping-off point to further develop tourism in Copenhagen. We are therefore currently making plans for the events and congresses we wish to attract to Copenhagen over the next 5-10 years, which will create a foundation for growth in the city’s experience-economy.

Events that will bring eyes on Copenhagen
In 2009 more than 100.000 people are expected in Copenhagen, in relation to the major and minor events the city has attracted. On top of this a huge number of journalists will cover the events.

United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) takes place from December 7th-18th. Copenhagen is developing into the environmental capital of Europe. Not only is the city leading on the environmental field, but Copenhageners are also among the most environmentally conscious citizens in the world. We protect our drinking water, buy increasing quantities of ecological food products and we can swim or go fishing in The Copenhagen Harbour. More of the cities hotels also have an ecological profile and the City Council is thinking green. A grand green vision has been made to become the Eco-Metropole of the World, which among others includes making Copenhagen the world’s best city for cyclists. Leading up to COP15 whole Copenhagen will go green, meaning that a large number of events will be held to focus on the topic leading up to the actual Climate Conference.

World Outgames 2009 features a multi-sport event, a cultural programme and a human rights conference, which will be held in Copenhagen from 25th of July – 2nd of August. The World Outgames, also referred to as the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Olympics, is one of the greatest sports and culture events on Danish ground ever, involving more than 8000 participants.

All eyes will be on Copenhagen when the winner of the Olympic Games 2016 will be announced as part of the IOC Session and Congress from October 1st-9th. The candidates are Rio de Janeiro, Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid – and both royalties, celebrities, Head of States and Presidents are expected in Copenhagen to witness the announcement of the winner.

In the recent years Wonderful Copenhagen has made international sports events part of its main business strategy. Besides the World Outgames, IOC session and congress, several other sports events like the Taekwondo World Championships will be held in Copenhagen in 2009. In fact more than 30 international sports events are held throughout the year in Denmark, which has made the Danish Ministry of Culture name 2009 as “The Danish Year of Sports”.

Meetings and congresses on the agenda
Business travelers and convention delegates make up more than 50 pct. of the total bed nights in the Copenhagen Region. Copenhagen has been among the top 10 convention cities in the world for years, but increasing competition has made us fall behind. As a result Wonderful Copenhagen and a number of other businesses, with support from the Capital Region, the Danish State and City Council, have commenced a project, called MeetDenmark. The main focus is to attract more international congresses and conventions to Copenhagen. The goal is to double the number of international congresses and conventions over the next years.

A larger number of congress and hotel facilities are opening this year, to help realize this goal. All in all 4000 new hotel rooms are set to be added to the city’s current hotel capacity. In June Cabinn Metro will open in Ørestad, designed by the famous architect Daniel Liebskind and Wake-up Copenhagen will follow on the Arp. Hansen Congress site on Kalvebod Brygge to mention a few.

At the same time the supply of among other world class concert facilities will increase the capacity and will bring new opportunities to Copenhagen. In January this year the world renowned international concert venue, DR Koncerthuset, opened in Ørestaden. DR Koncerthuset is designed by French architect Jean Nouvel together with Japanese acoustic engineer Yasuhisa Toyota. It has been called one the world best musical scenes already, and will open an array of musical opportunities for Copenhagen.

Copenhagen with one brand
Copenhagen is seen as Scandinavia’s most international city. The capital is often admired for its quality of life and has become the “must see” city in 2008, after Monocle Magazine crowned Copenhagen the “most livable city” in the world.

Copenhagen needs a strong common brand, so the many businesses and organizations, who on a daily basis tell the story about Copenhagen as an international city, do it with one voice. Therefore a brand project was launched in the end of 2008. The new brand unifies the city’s communication and message to the rest of the world will be a huge part of the Copenhagen’s communication in 2009.

Copenhagen to lead the way
Events, congresses, conventions and good branding will ensure to future-proof the tourism in Copenhagen through the current financial crisis, that worldwide leads to dropping tourist figures.

Wonderful Copenhagen continues to work very hard and is well on the way with actual initiatives, that will ensure its position as Scandinavia’s international Capital over the next many years.
